fall colors for a fall finish

It's fall and it's finished!

The Summer Sampler 2016 was a perfect quilt along for me.  I first blogged about it here.
I actually finished this quilt about a month ago.  My plan was to have it ready for a photo shoot on the perfect fall day during the peak color season.  Turns out my #fallcolorsforafallfinish tag was accurate as my quilt became camouflage in sunny scenery.

I sashed my blocks using directions given in Vintage Quilt Revival.  (The authors of the book were the hosts of the quilt along.)  I added an outside row to make this quilt just a little bit bigger.  My quilt finished about 68"x85"

I got a little overwhelmed thinking about how to quilt this.  I would have been fun to play with each block individually, but I ultimately decided to meander all over.  I really wanted to have a timely finish to share.

I used Quilter's Dream Select cotton batting.  This is a winter quilt for sure.  It's heavy!  I'm not sure if that's because of the shot cotton I used for the background or just that this is a bigger quilt than I usually make.  Either way it will be perfect for our camp.  I'm keeping this one!

No piecing on the back - I used this 108" wide print by Elizabeth HartmanThere is plenty of piecing on the front!

 Happy fall!

    1. Thanks Jan. I was inspired by a quilt Amy Smart made. https://www.instagram.com/p/BE7YH5KI22d/?taken-by=diaryofaquilter It knocked my socks off and since I had the bundle of prints I only needed the peppered cotton to copy her.

    1. Thanks Judy. In the unedited photos (not included here) the quilt was lost in the scenery. Elizabeth Hartman definitely has a good eye for color!

  7. What a beauty! I don't blame you one bit for intending to keep this one. The colours are perfect and what a great setting for all those lovely blocks. The meandering kept the focus on the piecing and made for a gorgeous finish!

    1. Thank you Lorna. I kind of thought I was taking the easy route to just meander, but this is a big quilt (for me) so it still took awhile. Also I agree, the piecing is already the focus! Defining it further wasn't necessary.
PS: I'm watching your schedule in hopes of attending one of your trunk shows that's not too far from me!

  8. That last photo is gorgeous. The quilt looks happy in all that fall glory! Your family will love snuggling under this one. Definitely a good one to keep. Lorna's right the meandering was a good choice....the blocks really shine!

    1. Thank you Mary. This is the longest quilt I've made and my husband is actually using it! Also, my granddaughter, who has a few(!) quilts of her own, LOVES the block designs on this one. It's fun to see her focusing in on them. Thanks for stopping by.

  11. What a beautiful quilt! Love the background color! The quilting looks perfect for a warm, cuddly quilt. We all apologize for falling back to a meandering stitch instead of custom quilting but I'm not afraid to say that I love the texture that it gives a quilt and allows the beautiful fabric and piecing to shine!
