pretty practice

If you stopped by last summer you may remember my sweet & sour dilemma.  I thought I could help the pattern emerge with the quilting.  I couldn't.
I will use Rita's tutorial again and pay better attention to fabric colors and print scales.  In the meantime - this quilt provided plenty of pretty practice...

Practice with my camera on a beautiful fall day.

Practice with free motion quilting - which can be seen better here on the back.

And practice with machine binding.

Since this was made with a bit of each print from only one line I worked a cut of the selvage into the back.

I used Quilter's Dream Wool battingLofty, light, & cozy!  This quilt finished at 48x72.  It's like an over-sized shawl.  I can wear it around the house without tripping!

I also got some practice hanging quilts in trees!
Thanks for stopping by.

Linking up with Crazy Mom Quilts Finish it up Friday.

  1. Color and value are key and it is a really difficult part of the process for me. But your quilt is very pretty and the quilting looks great, especially the detail shots on the back side. Now you can enjoy using it!

  2. It may not have come out the way you wanted, Karen. But it is a very pretty quilt. This reminds me of a similar experience when I made http://sewfreshquilts.blogspot.ca/2014/05/oh-suz-anna.html
The fact that you got some practice with fmq and machine finished binding is a plus. And having a quilt made with all that lovely fabric for you to use for yourself? What could be better!!!

    1. Hi Lorna. Yes, it is a pretty quilt and when in use no one is really looking for a pattern anyway. I'm pleased to have learned and practiced a lot with this quilt. (I'm also very glad I splurged and used the wool batting because I LOVE the weight and loft of it.)
Thanks for sharing your Oh Suz-Anna post with me. Yes, similar situation but still a bright and beautiful quilt!

    1. Thanks Ann Marie. I like it, too. The colors are beautiful and when using it no one is really looking at the pattern anyway! I think Abacas will be perfect for this pattern. I can't wait to see your quilt.

  5. Although it night not be exactly as you wanted this is a lovely quilt. And so much lovely quilting ....... I love the outside shots - we haven't had many sunny days like that recently so haven't ventured very far with my quilts - although I really want to!

    1. The tree was full of bright red leaves that morning. By about 2PM when I took these photos almost all of them had fallen. I have never seen a tree loose all it's leaves so fast.
Thanks so much for the quilt kudos and for stopping by!

  6. I often wear quilts around like big shawls too and chuckled as I pictured you wearing this:)
The quilting pattern does enhance the pattern and looks great. Very pretty!

    1. Thanks so much Heidi! Good to know I'm not alone in the quilted shawl wearing! I really do like that this is a narrower quilt and I don't trip walking around in it!
