playful pups and a giveaway

Welcome!
I’m so pleased to be participating in my first blog hop.  Thanks so much to Lorna at Sew Fresh Quilts who wrote this Dog Gone Cute pattern for eight darling puppies and organized all the fun!

Here is my finish!  I had lots of different ideas for this project but, as usual, it determined what it wanted to be.  I originally intended to use both sizes of the pattern and a variety of Alison Glass’ Handcrafted fabrics with the Robert Kaufman Essex Yarn Dyed in flax for the background.
The first three came out so dog gone cute!  I just love the pink and purple freckles!

Then I made a few more in other colors and sizes and they just weren’t working for me.  Too dark or just not fitting in with those first three.  So I acquiesced and returned to that original fat quarter.

Here's a tip to help you out as you make your blocks.  Put a piece of tape on the bed of your machine right in line with the needle.  Now just line up the bottom corner of the square on that line and sew.  No need to draw a line on on all those squares!

As I was carefully measuring and cutting and sewing with such limited fabric, it occurred to me that these puppies wanted to play!  So...it turns out this is actually a game board.  There are 15 puppies in this litter.  Seven pairs and one individual.
Now we can play Match The Puppy

I added a bit of sashing between the rows and columns for spacing. It finished at 36 x 40 - perfect for playing on the floor!

The back is a Home Dec print by Denyse Schmidt that I picked up over a year ago on #thegreatfabricdestash on Instagram.  (It's a closer match to the pair of green puppies than this photo shows.)  I used Quilter’s Dream wool batting for the poof factor and quilted it with classic clam shells for the win!

I’m really happy with how calm and mellow these little puppies are.  (They are even allowed on the furniture!)  Everyone loves a sweet puppy!

Speaking of sweet puppies, here are the three I’ve shared my life with:

The Beagle is Penny.  I grew up with her.
Our girls grew up with Emma,
the Yellow Lab.  She was actually more human than canine so including her here is questionable.
The Wheaten, Tula, was all mine.  100% terrier, she made it her job to keep me safe from every squirrel and bunny that dared enter our yard.  She took her job quite seriously.

Now for the giveaway!  To celebrate my first time participating in a blog hop I am offering a fat eighth bundle of Alison Glass’s new Handcrafted 2.  To enter just leave a comment on this blog post.  How about telling me the name of your favorite puppy?

I will use a random number generator to pick a winner on Tuesday, October 13th.  If you are a no reply blogger please be sure to check back to this post next Tuesday to see if you are the winner.

The giveaway is now closed.
The winner is PK Sews!

Thanks to everyone for your lovely comments and for sharing your fun dog names, stories, and memories with me.

In the meantime, be sure and check out all those participating in the Dog Gone Cute Blog Hop to see what they've made with this sweet pattern.

  6. Your quilt is adorable. We have had many pups--but I think my favorite would be our sweet basset hound, Dixie. When we rescued her, the lady who found her said that we would fall in love with bassets and never want to be without one, and I think she was right!

And thank you so much for that tip for sewing the squares, my blog is up on the 22nd, so I've gotta get going, and that tip will come in very handy! I've never actually had a dog myself, but have loved others from afar. My current fav is a friend's called Cassie.

And I love the fabric with the little pink and purple freckles. I have three dogs right now, Maggie the boston mix and Becker and Newton, litter mates and pit mixes...they are all my favorite :)

  22. I am falling in love with this pattern the more quilts that I see! I think your quilt is fantastic and a great way to teach and play a game with kids. I have had several dogs throughout my life and it is really hard to choose. But a dog named Bear would have to be my favorite. A fun, yet frustrating, fact about Bear is that he refused to be left in a fenced yard. Even if we just stepped inside to say refill a tea glass and left him alone for the few minutes. You just might as well open the front door and let him in, because he would already be sitting on the front sidewalk people watching. You and every neighbor, loved to watch him...his head would slowly follow each car as it went by. If someone was walking on the sidewalk, he would not move a muscle but would watch their every step until they were out of sight. It was hilarious some of the reactions that he received. Thank you for this great give away opportunity and have a wonderful creative day!

  80. Your quilt came out very cute. . . .and I love the idea of having a game in it.

Since I call all dogs "puppy" I guess I have to say that I love all dogs. . . .of course I have to say that I am partial to Westies, but I just love dogs.

My Bogart was the first dog I had as my own. . . .but having grown up with dogs I would have to say that Tippy, Bridget, Buttons, Bogart, Taffy, Casey and Bailey (the last two are my current dogs) were all my favorites.

  85. Love what you did with the pattern. Great idea making a game of it. Welcome to the world of blog hops, they are such fun and so full of ideas. Hard to pick which was my favorite of the 9 dogs that have graced my life. I think I will go with my current girls, Celie and Nettie. They are rescues and needed our love more than we needed theirs.

  86. I am enjoying the company of two dogs right now and a cat that thinks she's a dog :) one of my dogs is a terrier we got from the shelter a long time ago. She is an old lady now. She had been rescued from a terrible place and has always followed me everywhere like a shadow. If I turn to see her I can't because she stays behind me :) She's such a good girl. My other doggie living with me now is a lab mix and is actually my daughter's rescue dog. My daughter will be able to take her back in a few months which is great, of course, but I will really miss her! I love the cute puppy pattern you are using and I can't wait to try it on my own, after I have a few other projects finished up. Thank you for the giveaway of Allison Glass fabríc! It is my favorite fabríc right now so I'm really keeping my fingers crossed!

  94. Karen, it's wonderful to meet you.
Never had a puppy until I was married ...we adopted him in Arkansas where my husband grew up...a Chihuahua/Dachsund mix. Wanted to call him "Cinnamon" because of his color, but my Mother in law said he should have a short name..."Fred" it was decided. We had Fred for many years and he loved to chase motorcycles riding down the street. He'd chase to the end of the street and come back:) Love your Alison Glass purple puppy the most.

    1. Hi Diane. Nice meeting you, too. I love human names for dogs.
I like the pillow puppy, but the darker purple block earlier in the post wasn't working for me. I didn't like that the eyes were indistinguishable.
      Thanks for stopping by.

  96. My favorite puppy was an English Pointer. I named her Littabit of Ginger Snap and called her Ginger. Took her from her mother at two weeks because her mother had nine puppies and pushed her away to die. I fed her every 2 hours and even took her to work with me. I lost her 5 years ago at 10 years old to cancer.

  97. My favorite puppy is my whippet, Arnie. I just rescued him in March, and he is inseparable from me already! He is goofy and likes to groom my hair in the morning. Who needs an alarm clock when you have a dog? ;)

  98. I really like the choice of Alison Glass fabric for your pups... and that you made two grey pups. As for the name of my favourite pup... well. Even though I'm not much of a dog person, I am rather fond of a certain Corgi named Dylan. Sadly, he lives a day's drive away, so we don't get to play often!

  99. My favorite puppy was Nittany (a Spitz/Sheltie + mutt) who survived his mother abandoning him at birth, an electrical fire that totally destroyed the house he was in, and a ton of ticks and fleas which covered him when we got him at 6 weeks of age. We were blessed to have him as a part of our family for 18 years! This quilt reminds me of him...I love the fabric and quilting pattern you used to make it. Thank you for sharing,
