4 K8

This is my first "jelly roll race" quilt.  Jelly rolls contain an entire fabric line all cut in 2 1/2 inch strips and rolled up nice and neat.  This one is made from the 2wenty thr3e collection by Eric and Julie Comstock.

First you sew each strip together on the short side so you have one 2 1/2 inch x 1600 inch strip of fabric!  Then you match the ends and start sewing it together down the looong edge.  When you reach the end you cut it and do it again.  There is a very cute video/tutorial of it here.

The back is made of bigger pieces from the same collection.  I quilted this with meandering rectangles.  I really love how crinkly and soft it gets after washing.

This is my first attempt at using my sewing machine for the binding.  I used the blanket stitch.  There is room for improvement here but it's not too bad.  It will be lots stronger than hand stitching.

I met a very sweet (and fearless!) girl last summer.  K8, this one's 4U!

  1. Hi Karen, You're right, the tutorial was fun and informational. Once again you made a great quilt!! What happens after you do all that strip sewing? Do you put a little something in between the front and back of the quilt and then stitch some sort of a pattern perhaps to make the puckers?

    1. Yes, that's exactly right. I buy cotton batting on a roll and cut off whatever size I need. Officially, "quilting" is sewing 3 layers of fabric together. The various patterns of the quilting stitches create the "puckers". On this quilt I tried to use straight lines and sharp corners - kinda meandering rectangles. I sewed them fairly close together so it made lots of puckers. To me, lots of puckers equals lots of coziness.

  2. Wow, this caught my eye when I was checking out your triangles quilt. I don't particularly like a lot of jelly roll race quilts I see, but this one is BEAUTIFUL!!! I love how all the fabrics kind of blend in together and it has such a great texture. What a great finish!

    1. Thanks Jamie Lee. I kind of agree with you. They are hit or miss. I found this jelly roll on sale so thought I'd give one a try. And I hear Kate loves it and is updating her room to these colors so how perfect is that?
